Thesis Ideas
Ok I have two ideas they are both really raw and can use a lot of revision. The first one is comparing The Great Gatsby to The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. My focus would be comparing Gatsby, who goes through a personality change and reinvents himself from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby before he starts his rise to the top. Dr. Jekyll changes into Mr. Hyde, for a variety of different reasons. The other idea is comparing and contrasting The Catcher in the Rye to the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Holden Caulfield and Ferris Bueller both hate school and want to rebel, but they rebel in different ways. Both these ideas need a lot of work but they are my best so far.

Hey Zack!!
ReplyDeleteSo reading through both of these I find you are more prepared than you think.
Your first idea is really quite cool...I think the comparison of two classic novels would be fabulous. And the two transformations are different yet similar...I would be wary of The Great Gatsby, though. Whereas in Dr. Jekyll has a great deal of the novel devoted to the metamorphosis between good and evil, vary little is written in the physical/mental change Gatsby experiences. However, if the literacy is there, then it's excellent!
And the second is a little rougher, but still has enormous potential. The two opposing personalities of Ferris and Holden would be interesting to delve into and find the similarities and differences. One facet of the paper could be how the student body reacts to their disappearance. While Holden's classmates do not seem too distressed at his departure, Ferris' go wild with stories of how he is dying and such. Or you could focus on how the two differing sisters react to thief brother's announcements.
Good luck!!
