Favorites/Thesis Idea

Sorry this took so long...im not that tech savvy and kindof failed when it came to logging in :)

Okay, first off, I could never name one favorite book, because I have too many! Ill read almost any genre or time period (but i have a special fondness for Tudor England, The Reniassance and Victorian Era anywhere). Some of my speical loves are all of Shakespeare's works, The Inheritance Cycle, The Millenium Trilogy (shoutout to Mary!), The Yearling, anything written by Clive Cussler or Jack DuBrul, Lord Of The Rings, Before I Die, Harry Potter, and To Serve A King. But thats just the tip of the proverbial iceberg!

Secondly, for my thesis im going to focus on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo; more closely on Lisbeth Salander, the series' heroine. Throughout the novels and movies Lisbeth's sexual identity, both gender and physical, are hashed out and examined in deatil. I plan to focus on her hermaphroditic status that she exudes; not wanting to be either female or male due to the inherently ugly qualities of both she has seen in her lifetime. Who is Lisbeth without the title of "female"? Is she more of a man? A woman? Or something in between?

  1. Hey Siobhan,

First of all, Thanks for your comment it was very helpful and had some things I didn't think of. Ok, so I have never read any of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo books, but it is clear that you have a very specific and well thought out idea in mind. It sounds like you have it very figured out. The only thing I would suggest is to maybe compare it to another work or primary source. Your idea is very specific to your character. You could broaden the idea a little and compare gender roles, using Lisbeth to show those roles in one person. If you are able to find another work that shows similar things, it can make your idea that much more convincing and interesting. Overall, though, keep asking yourself questions about your topic and foci.
